Anyone who has experienced lip discoloration or is looking to add a natural color to create the perfect pout would be the perfect candidate for this new trend. The procedure is a semi-permanent tattoo that adds a natural tint to the lips. Licensed estheticians and tattoo artists mainly use the treatment to even out the skin tone on the lips and outline it, creating a fuller look similar to using lipliner. When speaking on the viral procedure, cosmetic tattoo artist Savannah Messenger gushed over how convenient it could be.

“Wake up every day with the perfect lip color and shape created to suit each individual uniquely,” she told InStyle. “No more smudged lipstick or lipstick transfers to your glass or to your partner after a kiss.”

This could be a great alternative to someone who is not into filler, as it creates a slightly fuller look without being nearly as invasive. The treatment can last about 2-3 years, compared to lip filler, which tends to disappear after 1 year. With the variety of colors, people are able to customize the results to get the exact look that they want. Anyone interested can expect to spend around $300, depending on where they go.

What to Expect From Lip Blushing

Before making any cosmetic change, it’s important to know what exactly you’re getting into. The process starts with getting a consultation to decide whether or not you’re eligible to even get lip blushing done. People who are currently dealing with skin conditions like eczema or cold sores, could be temporarily turned down for the treatment. While it could be disappointing, it’s important to be honest about your skin’s history, so your artist knows how to best proceed.

“With all procedures, there can be complications, so be sure the professional you choose is well-equipped to handle any that may arise,”  physician assistant Amy Koberling told Cosmopolitan.

Consultations are also the perfect time to discuss what you want your lips to look like and what’s possible for your specific anatomy. Once everything is hashed out, the next step is scheduling to get your lips tattooed.

The process of getting your lips blushed generally takes about 3 hours. During this time, a licensed professional will place numbing cream on the patient before beginning the procedure 30 minutes later. The numbing cream is said to be a big help, according to Hairy Little Things‘s senior lip blushing artist Nika Randall, who revealed her clients rated the pain 4 out of 10 while going through the process.

Once the treatment is over, there is a potential that your lips might look bigger than you expected, but Messenger tells all of her clients that it’s nothing to worry about.

“Each client is different. Some will swell up like balloons while others will leave with hardly any swelling at all. It all depends on your body chemistry,” she told the publication.

However, she reiterated that despite a potentially jarring look, it’s just part of the healing process.

How to Heal Safely and Make Your Results Last

Lip blushing aftercare is extremely important when it comes to getting the results you want. After the procedure is complete, lymph will begin to excrete from your lips, so it’s best to begin wiping it away after about 4 hours, according to Microblading LA. For the next few days, it’s best to keep the lips moist, so it’s recommended to apply ointment regularly, but you don’t need to overdo it.

“A thin layer every time you feel them drying out is plenty,” Messenger explained. “If you glob large amounts on, it will actually be bad for your lips. Over moisturizing can lead to lips becoming irritated and possibly forming little bumps on the lips.”

During this time, it’s also advised to implement small lifestyle changes to aid in the healing process. Microblading Minnesota warns that people should avoid soaking their face in water or exposing their tattoo to cleansers, soaps, or any harsh liquids. While the area might be dry at times, it is also advised to not pick at the skin around your lips at any point following getting the tattoo.
